Down with GUNDA "RAJ"

Just today Raj Thackerey has finally been arrested. I know that he will soon be released but atleast the state govt and police proved that they are not “spineless” as Raj had named them.
Apparently the MNS workers entered the examination halls where Railway Recruitment Board was conducting their exam. They snatched the papers from the candidates and did all they could to ruin the entrance tests. This is taking vandalism and goonda-gardi to new heights.
I really do no know why Mr Raj Thackerey has to resort to such cheap tricks for gaining power. Its nothing new considering the same was done in Tamilnadu against HINDI, then in Karnataka against TAMILIANS and now here in Maharashtra against NORTH INDIANS. Shiv Sena had taken to a similar act of thoughtlessness against South Indians 3 decades back.
But all I want to know is that in these kinds of fights, where do people like me stand? My parents are born and brought up in Tamilnadu and Kerala. Half of my life was spent in Delhi and the rest has been spent settling in Mumbai. I have nothing in Tamilnadu except my roots. I have nothing in Delhi except sweet childhood memories. I decided to settle down in Mumbai because of the opportunities here. Both my daughters are born here. They are Maharashtrians by birth but their mother tongue is Tamil. I never looked at Mumbai as a foreign city. Delhi or Mumbai, it was always a place in My Motherland which I saw.
Does it not hold good for many of those north Indians settled here? Mumbai is a big flourishing city today only because of the outsiders who decided to settle here. If not for them, this place would have still been a village. Each one of us, so-called-outsiders, have contributed in some or the other way to its growth. And this is the reward we get for accepting Mumbai and toiling our blood and sweat here. Today it is North Indians; who knows what these lunatics will think of tomorrow. They must be taught a lesson. The government should take strict measures to curb them. I have come to office inspite of the trouble being created by MNS workers only because I will not support the cause of the Bandh against the arrest of Raj.

Raj Thackereys son is apparently studying in an English Medium school and has taken to German as his second language. Then what right does this man have to talk about Marathi Manoos? What is this cause he keeps flaunting? Are his followers blind? Cant they see they are being used? I even know of few of my educated-sensible-Marathi-colleagues who are his supporters which I find preposterous! Probably they will understand only if they move out of their home-state!!! The worst part is that in this fight for votes and power, it is the common man who suffers. This common man is Marathi; he is also Punjabi; also a Tamilian and also a Bihari! It is really a pitiable situation!

I sometimes feel we were better off before 1947. If the Britishers were still ruling us, we would have stood united; and loved our nation more than our language/place/religion. All this talk of Indian Shining seems dull when you see such political dramas taking place around you. Sigh! If wishes were horses……

Seriously!! Something's wrong with the guy. I too was fuming today when I read the newspaper, can imagine the ire you a non-maharashtrian living in Mumbai must be feeling! If he feels so much for them, he can surely do better for Marathis than resort to cheap publicity gimmicks.

Vee October 21, 2008 at 2:20 PM

Whoa!!! I just came from Smita's post and there she had spoken about the shudder she gets when she reads abt murder/rape and stuff like that. And I commented stating why shudder just cuz for those things, and commented something on the lines which you have mentioned here.

What the fuck belonging to a particular state belongs. Like you, I have roamed half India before settling in Bangalore. We have been here for 13 years and my family cannot speak Kannada at all. I have managed to learn though (thank god!!!). And for that matter I cannot for sure say which state is my root-state. My folks belong to two diff states and they were never brought up in their respective state and settled in Delhi which they call their own state. I was born in Rajasthan and brought up in Himachal. It's all too complicated and there are millions like you and me in India.

What he has to say about Kashmiri Pandits, Parsis et al.

This is all sickening. I might sound cynical but I somehow feel that I should boycott Mumbai and request my friends to do so from going there and to relocate those who are already there.

Raj is suffering from many disease. He is a psychotic, a filth, a scum, probably there is lack of sex in his lives. And yes, his followers are blind.

So true. THese people are all fanatics & what blooming logics they give.

MNS attacked students from Bihar because railways jobs are filled with biharis. They don't get those jobs on merit. more than 50 % jobs in railways go to biharis alone- even in south india. These are goons. U r settled in Mumbai. Have u ever planned to settle in Patna or UP? Would u like it? The law and order, kidnappings, murders, booth capturing that goes on in UP Bihar is well known. Ur daughters wont be able to go out of house alone if u move there. and if these Bihari-UPites flood mumbai at this rate, soon Mumbai will resemble a small village of Bihar/UP. Then even u will be in trouble. Do u want that? Unless u want to live in a Mumbai that becomes like UP-Bihar, u need to stop their mass migration to Mumbai. As simple as that. Or else, even your daughters will be subjected to the same fate as thousands of girls in infamous bihar today- even if u dont move to bihar. Coz bihar itself plans to move to mumbai!!!

WhatsInAName October 21, 2008 at 9:25 PM

JLT!
Absolutely. Surely. There are many other ways whereby he can really do something good for his people than fighting against another region and teaching his people rowdyism!

Oxy!
Boycotting may not be the solution. We need to fight against this mad cause and kill it once and for all. I feel that there should be some judicial action taken against him and any such politican who uses such points in his political agenda!

Monika!
You bet. Fanatics is the word!

WhatsInAName October 21, 2008 at 9:55 PM

Mr Anonymous,
:)
If you feel your cause is justified, why are you afrad to come out in the open?
Let me answer you queries. I did not choose to settle in UP/Patna only because I did not get any opportunity there. I have nothing against the states.
How can you judge the people of a state by its administrators? Why create problems for innocent people just because of the politicians of their state? Are you not repeating what was done during the partition?
Dont you think there are bigger issues in India that need to be dealt with rather than wasting energy on such petty stuffs which are nothing but a means of power for some selfish politicians?
You are talking of Biharis converting Mumbai into an unsafe area? I think MNS is already doing something like that!!!

WIAN, I know that's not the solution. I just uttered it in haste. I am very much peeved at this. Not even blast/murder or anything kills me more than something like this..

And the man is now behind bar. Some action chalo has been taken now. Let's see what happens on Nov 4th.

Mama - Mia October 22, 2008 at 1:39 PM

so so shanti!

M says everytime we cross a state bordfer its a new country... and this is so sad!

i mean our country is looked up to for its sheer diversirty. when did diversity become divided?!

my father yesterday said that todday i am ashamed to be a Marathi and i know exactly what it means!

and the part about educated pals thinking its right is so true. i think all such parties should be branded as terrorist outfits like SIMI and banned.

we really dont need them.

great post Shanti!

cheers!

couchpapaya October 22, 2008 at 9:54 PM

WIAN - this is truly disgusting! i wonder when we as a people will start believing in INDIA as a concept instead of heralding ourselves as belonging to a particular state. as for RT, of course it's all politics, but the thing that truly scared me is when u said ur 'educated' colleagues support this issue!!!! bravo for ur reply to anon above .....

Kush October 23, 2008 at 3:48 AM

O well, isn't Raj Thackerey a hit with bloggers? Talking of which, sample this: http://www.thehoot.org/web/home/story.php?sectionId=19&mod=1&pg=1&valid=true&storyid=3325

I agree if we had had firangiis to hate, we would have been united. Its funny how ppl stand united when opposed and fall apart in times of relative peace.

aMus October 23, 2008 at 6:44 AM

like you, i've moved half the country and call every city my own...

there are enough problems plaguing india, why can't toletrance be the new mantra and work together towards weeding out the necessary evils...why bring religion, nativity into teh pic...

sometimes i really wonder whether it is worth coming back...

Anonymous,  October 23, 2008 at 8:44 PM

Mystique :)
Very well put and I can understand you getting carried away. Any true Indian would! I am only feeling sad that even educated people can think of dividing India based on laguage! Very sad!

Oxy :)
Its OK. Even my blood boils when I hear of such madness. For that matter, even when the Kannada people were fighting for sharing water, I felt disgusted! How can people deny each other natural resources! India can only progress when and our people come out of all this low mentality and stop getting misled by corrupt politicians!

Anonymous,  October 23, 2008 at 8:49 PM

Mama-mia :)
Very well said! We should really ban any such party who takes to division of the country as their agenda. Democracy does not mean that the politicians be allowed to use the policy of divide and rule! Yes, they are no less than terrorists! We really dont need them at all!

Couch P :)
Yes, isnt it a pity that even educated people think this way and are ready to get misled. What a pity! :( but I still have hopes ....Someday we will be above all this!

Anonymous,  October 23, 2008 at 8:53 PM

Rhett :)
Thanks for the link. I agree that media may have created a Frankenstein. They may have made an issue out of nothing but Raj surely seems to be loving it in any case. He could have done better than to use it to his advantage. Dont you feel so? He could have denied it all had his words been twisted. But he did not! Anyways, lets see what happens and I hope this issue dies! Funny or not, we need more unity if we want out country to actually shine!

Anonymous,  October 23, 2008 at 8:54 PM

Suma :)
Lets hope that we can rise and shine above all this and emerge a truly developed nation!
I dont want to lose hope yet!

Raj Thackereys son is apparently studying in an English Medium school and has taken to German as his second language!!! LOL!!! Man heights of drama! Im really glad that you pointed it out! If only newspapers would bring it out for the common man!

Artnavy October 24, 2008 at 12:26 PM

that entire family gives me the shudders and so does their neighbour in Gujarat- btw have u seen parzania?

Anonymous,  October 24, 2008 at 11:45 PM

OK This is 'Anonymous' again. Yes, I am 'anonymous' because I am afraid to be lynched. Look at the language all you people have used against me. I should be 'orphaned', 'lynched', 'balls to be cut off'. This is the language you people have used..this is ur thought process and you call Raj a goon! Look in your own hearts. Look at your own writings. So u guys have a right to get angry and abuse and talk violent stuff (thankfully this is internet so u hvnt actually physically attacked me). But marathis don't have a right to throw a tantrum when north indians conspire to take away the jobs rightfully meant for marathis???
Even if my opinions made u furious, u could have stayed in your 'legal' limits. But no! You blasted me..abused me..and then you say- look what MNS is doing. How are u guys different???

THIS..precisely THIS specific language and attitude of UP-Bihar people makes marathis insecure. It makes them feel that...if we let them stay, tomorrow they will kill us and take our land and money. The 'attack first' policy stems for the fear that 'if you don't attack them, they will kill you'.

I am not saying that whatever happened in Mumbai was 'right'. But I despise the attitude that now condones the burning of trains and railway stations in Bihar saying 'oh that's just a natural reaction by students'. What about the violence in Bihar in last two days? How many of you have written blogs condemning that as well???

Why is patience and kindness always expected only from marathis? How many of you have equal hatred for south indians who are extremely famous for anti-Hindi agitations? What about Dal Khalsa in Haryana? There has been bomb blast in Bhojpuri theatre in Ludhiana to target bihari workers. This news can be searched on the internet. But how many of you will speak the same way about Punjabis?
Someone talked about pushing the trash under carpet. What marathis increasingly feel is- while southern states, bengal, punjab don't want these migrants, they are hostile to them and they are pushing all migrants to go to maharashtra which is now facing problems due to this.
Over-population and under-development of Bihar is a national problem and there should be some solution for that.
Otherwise even if you guys kill all marathis and maharashtra is renamed bihar-2 or UP-2, similar issue will arise in other states after maharashtra goes down.
Fix the root cause, not the reaction.

Anonymous,  October 25, 2008 at 2:44 AM

Whatsinaname, you are supporting the fact that people visiting your blog abused a fellow indian i.e. me.
Ok, I maybe having a different opinion than u guys, but you are also doing the same thing..the same thing that you so fiercely opposed in ur blog. So just ask urself if you have any right to criticise Raj or his men.
When people write stuff like 'should be sent to moon and thrown from there', you are writing this against not just me, but against every person who supports Raj.
But who are the leaders of UP-Bihari people in Maharashtra? Abu Azmi, Amar Singh and Lalu Yadav.
What are their backgrounds? Abu Azmi is an accused in 1993 Mumbai blasts who went scot free due to lack of evidence. I don't have to write about Amar Singh and Lalu Yadav except that they support SIMI, the terrorist organization that conducts blasts everywhere.
So are u against these people (and their supporters- the UPBihar people that Raj's men beat up)??? Or u r only against marathis but not against the people who conduct blasts in the country!
I also read the history of anti-Hindi agitations in Tamilnadu- including deaths and fires and stuff..and could see exactly where Raj gets his ideas from :) But I don't think any of u have guts to speak against Tamilians (they are now openly supporting LTTE- which has killed thousands of Lankans and is a terrorist organization).
My only question- why is it that your blood boils only when a couple of biharis are beaten up , but you don't feel anything about all the above things I have written!!!It seems to me that u guys just hate marathis and want all marathis to vanish from India.

Avionic Spanker October 26, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Well, so much water has flown under this particular bridge that I don't even know if I should comment.

I reckon the fundamental reason for insecurity among the locals is the fact that they see their traditions and customs being threatened - the identity of their village/town/city/metro being threatened. This is a natural reaction. Happens everywhere in the world and could happen if there was a reverse migration of rest of India to Bihar/UP etc. This insecurity can be mitigated in two ways - the newcomers blend in so that they become a part of and adopt the regional identity or there is a sense of awareness about the newcomers created in the minds of the locals. Among the two, I prefer the former because its more unifying whereas the latter is more 'democratic' and subscribes to the ideals. I, as an Indian, should not be barred from living honorably and peacefully in any part of India.

As long as one of the two does not happen, we all can froth at the mouth and abuse each other as long as we want and nothing will change. At the end of the day, the people we elect have to tap the pulse of their constituencies.

@anonymous - Frankly, I think there is way too much hysteria built into MNS and its policies. For right or wrong, we get the leaders we deserve. With such polarised polity, how a Raj Thackeray will help the Marathi manoos or Lalu will help the Bihari is beyond my understanding. I just KNOW that both are wrong in their own ways.

Excellent point about the burning of trains and LTTE. Amazing to see that hypocrisy as well.

@WIAN - I think this is a very good post. But what has Thackeray's son got to do with this post? Does he need to be forced to learn Marathi so that he grows up in the mould of his father? We could do will less Thackerays

@suma - It is. Always.

I respect your decision to stay anonymous but isnt it like hiding and fighting. If you really feel yours views are right, you should come out or are you afraid that some of us already know you and you want to let your better picture remain!
About being a hypocrite, I agree that I let Vee and Vibes get carried away since I know them personally but "we didnt start the fire"! Though Gandhian principle seems wonderful in writing, there are limits to everything. You can hit others and when they hit back, it hurts? Just think of the life of Maharashtrians in other states that you and the likes of you are putting at risk!
As for the recent violence in Bihar, I am very much against that too. Its crazy way of retaliation. About the LTTE, I dont want to speak. I know certain Srilankan Tamilians who have migrated to TN and heard a first hand account of what they have gone through! Violence of any kind is abhorable.

I think I could not make the point of the post very clear. What I am trying to say is that if one Bihari is corrupt, do not hate all Biharis. If one muslim is a terrorist, not all muslims need to be targetted. Hate the crime not the criminal.
And for educated people like yourself, please lets not get misled so easily!

WhatsInAName October 27, 2008 at 10:11 AM

Very apt and practical solutions provided, like you have pointed out, we have good leaders who promote these rather than furthering their own careers and bank deposit! At the end of the day, its people like you, me and anonymous who end up arguing and hurting each other, isnt it?
Why I menationed Rajs son was to show the double standards he is following! Ofcourse, we are much better off without likes of them!

Thanks for that wonderful comment.

Mangalore - 2 yrs
NY - 8 yrs

Still an Indian ...yeah!

Hell I am a Nomad and the world is my playground

Anonymous,  October 27, 2008 at 1:58 PM

Whatsinaname, Raj spoke openly- look now biharis are landing in mumbai with revolvers to kill Raj and his men. So I don't want give my name and have some trigger-happy north indians chasing me in order to kill me (some people on this very board are eager already to kill me). You may call my behaviour (of not revealing my name) cowardice, I would call it common sense ;)

when you say- "We didnt start the fire",and "I don't follow gandhian principle", isn't it the same thing what Raj T and his men also saying? Many times written complaints were made to the railway board that there is injustice to marathis in the job exams. It's not only in maharashtra, but also in other states and similar agiation was done in karnataka as well. Now even some Orisa MPs are complaining that how come oriya students crack IAS but don't crack railway exams!
There have been MANY cases where migrants from UP-Bihar have threatened local marathis for land or business. My friend was threatened..he had land in pune (ancestral land) and some north indian goondas were threatening him to sell that land to them. He doesnt want to sell it! They couldn't threaten my friend's family because his father and uncle are both retired army officers and they didn't give in to this goondaraj..army makes one tough! But u can imagine plight of an average marathi manoos.
A lot of violence, harrassment, ill-treatment which doesn't get reported on channels everyday got bottled up and then it all errupted..so the marathis do think 'we didnt start the fire'.
I do not justify the way this protest went, but I feel disgusted at the double standards, that's all.
And now a Bihari boy hijacked a bus..his gang is here to kill Raj..and he fired at innocent passengers..threatened to kill the bus conductor..what is all this? Is this justified now because 'oh but he didnt start the fire'. MNS guys didnt use a single gun..not a single bullet was fired in maharashtra by any marathi man..how are biharis and UPs getting gun licenses? How many marathis have gone to somebody else's state and created such kind of gunpoint drama there??? zero!
But MNS boys are terrorists, bihari boys are 'poor frustrated youths rightfully fighting against injustice' (by firing at innocent bus passengers).
Good point abt LTTE. The tamils are so unapologetic abt it. I guess that's what keeps their state free from unwanted migrants. They don't care whether sm1 calls them parochial or goonda or terrorist, they just do what they want to do. So when you go to chennai and speak in Hindi to an auto driver, he takes you to your hotel which is 10 minutes away from the airport, by first taking you thr' whole of chennai for 2 hrs and charges 500 bucks, though he always knew the hotel address :) (this is true story) and the entire tamil land is totally unapologetic abt that behaviour.

WhatsInAName October 29, 2008 at 10:07 PM

Shalini! :)
Yes, you and me are probably nomads! Good or bad, is to be seen :)

Anon :)
You wont give up and neither will I? Biharis retaliating in the ways you mentioned is wrong no doubt about it. If what you say is right, there are ways to control. I am only worried where this will all lead to. We dont want riots where innocent people get killed and sacrficed for the whims and fancies of the policians! And how long will it take for MNS to turn against all outsiders, I wonder!
